Children in the State’s custody often have multiple contacts listed in the RainTree (RT) record. The Contact tab in RT includes two columns on the far right that allow referral staff, providers, and administrative staff to indicate the current level of State oversight in the family’s case.
At this time, there are two available designations: OCS Involvement and OCS Custody.
OCS Involvement: indicates that the child remains in the legal custody of the parent(s), while the State may be providing support services or conducting an investigation related to the child’s safety or well-being.
OCS Custody: indicates that the State is the child’s legal custodian, while the parent(s) or foster family serves as the physical custodian.
Referral staff, providers, and administrative staff should select the appropriate status within the OCS contact record (by clicking on the contact). This action places an “X” in the corresponding column to reflect the child’s current situation. This designation should be applied only on the OCS caseworker’s contact line.
This information supports administrative staff in obtaining the correct signatures for consent and other Part C–required forms and does not replace IFSP team decision-making or clinical documentation.
