Release of Information for Children Involved with OCS

Children involved with the Office of Children’s Services (OCS) may have different authorization requirements depending on the child’s legal custody status, placement, and the type of information being requested or released.

OCS involvement does not automatically mean that all information requires an OCS-signed ROI, nor does it mean that all communication follows the standard PIC ROI process. Staff will identify who has authority for the specific type of information being requested or shared and will follow the applicable guidance.

Use the appropriate section below based on the child’s current placement and legal circumstances:

When a child in OCS custody changes placement, staff will review the current or existing ROI because the individuals authorized to participate in communication may have changed.

Providers will notify Admin when a placement change occurs so the current ROI can be ended, if needed. A new ROI will be obtained from OCS or the appropriate legal decision-maker for the child’s new placement.

If staff experience barriers obtaining updated authorization from OCS, they may contact the OCS Placement Search and Support Unit (PSSU) for assistance.
